5 ACIDS WORTH ADDING TO YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

5 acids worth adding to your skincare routine

When in it comes to beauty, I am still on the search for the best products that I can continue adding to my skin care routine. Hearing the word acid itself takes me back to my experience with benzoyl peroxide which was in the panoxyl ointment I used that really messed me up. I wrote about it in my products that didn’t work for my face post here, now that my skin is back to normal, I am very cautious on what products I apply or plan to put on my face nowadays. Certain acids can be particularly helpful in the exfoliation of the skin, reducing appearance of wrinkles and also taking care of acne. These are 5 acids that are worth adding to your skin care routine.

5 ACIDS WORTH ADDING TO YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

GLYCOLIC ACID

This acid is an exfoliation alpha-hydroxy acid which leaves your skin having a renewed feeling. It’s also found to boost collagen which helps out when it comes to wrinkles. Since it’s an acid, you should start with a small percentage in order not to damage your skin. I have not particularly introduced this yet since I don’t have deep-set wrinkles but once those bad boys start coming up I’ll be ready for the attack.

WHAT NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

what nobody tells you about postpartum depression

Postpartum Depression

Being a mother has been the best thing that has ever happened to me, but I never expected to feel the way I did after having my son. Depression was the last thing on my mind, I knew things would change but not the way they did, little did I know it was all due to postpartum depression. It took a while for me to even understand what was happening and being away from my family at that point was not helping either. It is a serious thing and I hope people understand what happens before judging any new mother out there. What nobody tells you about postpartum depression.

10 THINGS TO DO ON A RAINY DAY

10 things to do on a rainy day

All about rainy days

I love rain, but there just those days where the rainy days start to become normal days and then I just get tired of it and wish it to be over already.Having something to do to keep my mind off not being able to go out is always helpful. These are 10 things to do on a rainy day.

  1. Make sure you have a really good long book. The rain may decide to be a week long and the longer that book is the better your survival.
  2. Have your favourite box sets ready for the snuggly nights on the sofa in your pjs, I love repeating some of them just because I have time.
  3. Schedule yourself a nice extra warm bath and even light yourself some candles, this is  time to have your own at home spa, pamper yourself, get your scrubs and facials out and relax.
  4. Being a lazy day, have your best food take outs on hand and just let loose that day. Eat what you have been craving all week from your best place and savour each bite.
  5. If you are not up for the take out, have a go to soup recipe on hand which you know you can whip up anytime and make yourself a big bowl and enjoy.
  6. If your not alone, you could plan to have a mini date night and catch up, it will not only be fun, but also memorable.
  7. You could also take this time to clean up the house, declutter, and organise yourself for the days ahead. This will make you spend some of your time and as a bonus you will have a clean house.
  8. Get your rainy day playlists out because a bit of good music will make you enjoy your time indoors.
  9. If you are lucky and have a fireplace, it’s time to put it in use and just warm yourself up, plus it’s a bonus get some marshmallows and crackers and have a ball in the process.
  10. Last but not least, you could meal prep or create some menus for the weeks ahead, you have enough time to figure out what sorts of meals you would like or what to introduce to your daily meals.

Finally , hope you like my ideas and if you have more to add on this list please do share and for what to do when you’re bored, find here.

10 LIFE LESSONS I’VE LEARNT SO FAR

10 life lessons i've learnt so far

Hey Everyone,

I do know I am still going to have lots more of  lessons throughout my lifetime but these are 10 life lessons I’ve learnt so far.

  • Don’t be afraid to fail, you might think that there is nothing else that can go wrong but they do and all you need to do is pick yourself up and try even harder.
  • Never be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Pride always comes before a fall, so don’t let your pride get the best of you. If you can get help do ask.
  • Life is too short. Now this is still one of the lessons I am getting to understand even more. Every morning we wake up is a new day. So try new things, travel, eat something new, the same morning never repeats itself.
  • Stop comparing yourself to others. You will never know what someone else is going through behind the scenes, so follow your own path and stop looking back.
  • Try and discover yourself each and every day, don’t limit yourself to a particular thing you will be surprised at what you are capable of.
  • Always see the good in another’s. This one can be difficult as much as there’s that one person that ones to make you go nuts, just find the good in them and all will be fine.
  • Not everyone is what they seem to be. Have people you can rely on and build each other up. Friends come and go but if you get to have just one to be there for you when need be, then stick by them too.
  • Family is always important. Blood is thicker than water, don’t forget to be around family from time to time.
  • Be kind to others, it doesn’t hurt to say “Good morning”, the goodness comes back to you. As the quote says what you see in others exists in you, here are various things happy people do
  • Lastly, love deeply and unconditionally.

What are your life lessons so far?

MY TOP BEAUTY PRODUCTS

my top beauty products

Hey there,

When it comes to beauty products, I am sort of a hoarder and as much as I tell myself to stop buying new products, they still end in the cart. Luckily I have some that always remain the same. These are some of my top beauty products that I am not planning to change for a long time, as they say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. From brushes, to moisturisers and masks.

1. MAGNITONE CLEANSING BRUSH

Before I got this brush, I had my eyes on the clarisonic and thought that it would not impress me, but after three years of using the magnitone, I have no regrets and am still excited every time I get to use it, because it does the same thing it deep cleanses my skin, removes my remaining makeup perfectly and has no faulty issues plus it saved me some money compared to the clarisonic. I change the brushes every six months and until I decide to replace it, am good with this one.

2. DICKINSONS WITCHHAZEL TONER

I started using this when I ran out of apple cider vinegar and I must say, I love it, not too harsh very refreshing and it just makes my skin feeling clean and clear and my breakouts have really reduced after sticking to this toner.

3. AVEENO MOISTURISER

This moisturiser is the it for me, I used to ignore it thinking it was just another one claiming to reduce breakouts, but it has made my skin better and will continue using it because  I am hesitant to try out another product. Even when I know I have a new product to use, I still go back to this one because it’s the only product that works for my skin finally.

4. BENTONITE CLAY MASK

It’s not only pocket friendly, but the results are amazing and for the amount you get, it will last you long. I chose this as my top beauty product because it does exactly as it says it would, your face feels like you thoroughly deep cleaned it but without the scrubbing effort and with flawless results, I am not planning on changing it anytime soon for more on my face mask review, find it here. Perfect product in my opinion.

5. IVES COLLAGEN MOISTURISER

This is my last layer when it comes to my night time routine. The first time I used it, my skin woke up feeling plump and so soft and now my husband uses it and he loves it.I wrote about this in my skincare routine here. It’s a good night cream that’s why it’s in my top beauty products.I am tempted to try out the Neutrogena water gel  because the packaging looks so cool and serene. Anyway I will continue using this and I will get the Neutrogena to try out. Will give my review after I get it.

There you go, my top beauty products as per now and I know I might end up changing them some time down the line but until then, I will stick with these. If you have any questions or you would like to tell me about your top beauty products, please do tell in the comments below. Do you have any go to products you that you stick to strictly and don’t tend to change?

PRODUCTS THAT DIDN’T WORK FOR MY SKIN

products that didn't work for my skin

My skin has never been perfect, before I found what kind of products worked for me, I went through some trial and errors which I highly regretted and asked myself why I even tried them, guess that’s what you get when your striving for perfection. I’ve had acne, allergies, breakouts and even chemical reactions due to skin products I thought would work for me. Here are products that didn’t work for my skin.

1. SHEA BUTTER

Shea butter has been all the rage when it comes to skin care and hair, and as much as I do agree with the hair part, with my skin, this product just went wrong, from all the reviews I read about how it worked for many people with flawless results, I don’t think my face got that memo because what my skin looked like after was just a disappointment, but it was just a way of my skin telling me to just forget about it. My face broke out and looked like a grease ball,  just not for me.
Shea Butter Unrefined Certified Organic – 100% Pure – 100g by Naissance

2. AFRICAN BLACK SOAP

This is the second product that I read reviews on and  bought it the same time with the shea butter, with hair it’s perfect but after two days, it removed my makeup and cleansed my skin but I started itching my face like crazy and then I got hives like an allergic reaction of some sort,I thought it was the apple cider vinegar I was using as a toner and decided to stop the vinegar but it just got worse, so I knew it was the black soap and after I stopped it, my skin reverted back to normal. It may have worked for other people but am not going through that again.

MY GARLIC AND HERB ROASTED POTATOES

my garlic and herb roasted potatoes

We all know about the usual Sunday roast; I never really follow that rule, but the only thing that stays the same is that we always have roasted potatoes on Sundays. The other difference is that what accompanies the potatoes is all up to my family’s choice. This is a recipe for my garlic and herb roasted potatoes which I have finally been able to perfect after many failures of soggy and burnt potatoes. It’s very simple and all you need is;

my garlic and herb roasted potatoes

  • 2 jacket potatoes (I used two huge ones)
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Mixed herbs
  • Paprika
  • Olive oil

MY TRIED AND TESTED TIPS ON HANGOVER CURES

my tried and tested tips on hangover cures

When one drink leads to another

We have all been in a position where we have had one glass too many, and as much as I always remember how I will feel the next day, I always lie to myself that maybe I won’t feel as bad as last time only to end up feeling like death itself and wishing for a truck to just run me over. So I tried some of the myths to cure some of my hangovers thanks to the internet,  am not saying I get them every weekend because that would just be torture for no reason at all, but we have those parties or family visits where a glass ended up being one too many. Here as some of my tried and tested tips on hangover cures.

MY KACHUMBARI RECIPE

my kachumbari recipe

What’s Kachumbari?

Better known as salsa fresca or pico de gallo depending on where you grew up, we call it kachumbari in Kenya. It’s one of those dishes that can go with anything and just makes me happy. Once you combine it with more spices, you can make it to be your own or even add some meat and other ingredients to make a proper salad. Hope you get to love it as much as I do. For my kachumbari recipe, you will need

my kachumbari recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 onions (red or white)
  • A couple of tomatoes
  • Raw chillies
  • 1 lemon
  • Pinch of salt and more for the onions
  • A bunch of coriander

METHOD

  • Chop your onions into small pieces and put them in a bowl, pour some water to cover them and add in two tablespoons of salt. (This helps in removing the sharp taste of onions) and place them aside.
  • Slice up the tomatoes and place them in another bowl along with the chillies also chopped into small pieces.
  • Put a pinch of salt and mix them together.
  • After about ten minutes pour the onions into a sieve and run some water through them to rinse out the salt.
  • Put the onions in the bowl with the tomatoes and mix them up, at this point the colours already start making you smile.
  • Squeeze one lemon and mix it up again, then chop up the coriander and add that in too.
  • Now from this point, you can be done and place it the fridge to chill out or you can add some more stuff and make it your own.
  • I usually add some olive oil black pepper or even some grated carrots either way it will be delicious.

So that’s it my kachumbari recipe and for a quick tip, crush up an avocado mix it in and there you have some guacamole and eat with some chapati on the side, recipe here. Serve and enjoy, do try this out and tell me if you loved it, what do you call this where your from?
