Hiya!
I hope you’re keeping warm and enjoying the New Year so far. I’m doing great, but I’ve definitely noticed the dry, crisp air chill—and my skin has noticed too!
Just like we swap out our light summer clothes for cosy knits, our skincare routine needs a little seasonal maintenance. When the humidity drops, and we start using indoor heating, our skin can get dry, flaky, and a little bit sensitive.
You know I’m all about simple, skincare that makes sense in real life. This isn’t about buying 10 new products, although I have done that before; it’s about making a few simple substitutions to keep your skin hydrated all season long.
Here are the three simplest swaps to make in your beauty routine this winter:
1. SWAP YOUR CLEANSER (Go Creamy, Not Foamy)
That super-foaming gel cleanser you loved in the summer for controlling oil? It might be too harsh now. Foaming cleansers can strip your skin’s natural moisture barrier, leaving it tight and irritated in the cold.
Instead, move to a cream, milk, or oil cleanser. These formulas cleanse just as effectively but are much gentler. They keep essential moisture locked in, which is crucial for fighting off dryness. My skin immediately feels calmer and less sensitive when I make this change!

2. DITCH THE LIGHT LOTION, Hello Thicker Cream
In summer, your lightweight gel moisturiser felt perfect. But as the temperature drops, your skin needs a heavier, richer protective layer. Think of it as putting a coat on your skin! Look for moisturisers labelled as “cream” or containing richer ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or shea butter. A thicker moisturiser helps patch up any tiny cracks in your skin barrier caused by wind and indoor heating. This not only prevents dryness but also protects against environmental stressors. Slather it on, especially before bed! Oh, and don’t forget your feet and hands.
3. INTRODUCE A WEEKLY MOISTURE MASK
While I do love my clay mask for oily summer skin, winter is the time to pamper your face with deep hydration. Add a hydrating or sleeping mask to your routine once a week. This is a fantastic way to replenish your skin with a huge dose of moisture quickly. You can put it on for 15 minutes while you’re enjoying a comforting soup or use a sleeping mask overnight—you wake up with bouncy, happy skin. It’s the easiest self-care step!
Transitioning your skincare for the colder months doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Focus on these three simple swaps to protect your skin from the colder, drier weather. A little extra moisture goes a long way! And keeps your skin barrier happy.
