MY EASY HOMEMADE CHAPATI RECIPE

MY EASY HOMEMADE CHAPATI RECIPE

Hello Everyone,

This past weekend, I decided to relive one of my childhood memories once again when it comes to food and make some chapatis for my family. There are different ways to make them but this is the way I learnt when I was young and I never changed it since they always turn out perfect every time. Back home in Kenya, chapati can be found anywhere and in any restaurant, on most occasions, parties you name it. It’s one of those meals that just has to be there whenever there’s a celebration or most Sundays like in our household. I like pairing mine with some chicken stew, chicken tikka masala, kachumbari and even have one with a nice cup of tea for breakfast. So today I will be sharing with you my easy homemade chapati recipe with some updated pictures. You will need;

MY EASY HOMEMADE CHAPATI RECIPE

my chapati recipe

Ingredients

  • 2  to 4 cups of all-purpose flour and a bit more for rolling it out and adding if it gets too sticky.
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • A quarter teaspoon of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of oil and more for the cooking part (I use vegetable oil but Olive oil is fine too)
  • A cup of lukewarm water

METHOD

  • In a bowl, pour the warm water with the salt and sugar and stir it until dissolved.
  • Add flour and mix it in using a spoon to come together, add more flour if it gets too sticky as you go along.
  • Tip it onto a clean surface and start kneading it into a ball, then back into the bowl and put two tablespoons of oil and knead again.
  • Wrap it up in cling film and set it aside for ten minutes, I rest it for a while to make it softer.
  • On a floured surface, roll it out into a big round circle about an inch thick.
  • Take a tablespoon of oil and rub it around with a spoon or your hands.
  •  Slit the circle lengthwise to make vertical strips of dough about two inches in width, depending on the size of the chapatis you want to make.
  • Take one piece and roll it in your hands like a ribbon while stretching it out as you go, and this way you get to choose what kind of size you want them to be.
  •  Cover them again with some cling film for another ten minutes.
  • Then take a rolling pin and on a floured surface and roll them out into circles, not too thin and not too thick.
  • In a heated pan, take your rolled out dough and place it in, now with your vegetable oil and a spoon be ready to check the underside of your chapati.
  • When it starts having brown spots, turn it and put some oil and spread it on the chapati then turn it again and repeat.
  • Once both sides have browned evenly, take it out and set it aside on a plate and cover it with a cloth.
  • Repeat the process, serve and enjoy.

  11. Joan you are a good teacher. Your step by step instructions are clear uncluttered and easy to follow. Interestingly your chapati recipe seems similar to what we call roti. We eat it with curried chicken or beef.
